Interior Design 101: 5 Interior Design Mistakes To Avoid

Let’s face it - we all make mistakes. And when it comes to making mistakes in interior design, not even the most experienced designers are immune. After all, we're (stylishly) human too.

But behind every mistake is a lesson, and it just so happens that I'm also a great teacher. So grab your pencil and paper, here are 5 common design mistakes and how to solve them:

1) Ignoring the Importance of Lighting

  • Mistake: Relying solely on overhead lighting or neglecting to layer lighting.

  • Solution: Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Use floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces to create a balanced and inviting atmosphere. Natural light should also be maximized where possible.

2) Choosing Paint Colors First

  • Mistake: Selecting paint colors before deciding on anything and limiting your choices.

  • Solution: Choose your furniture, textiles, and key accessories first. Use these items to guide your choice of paint colors, ensuring a harmonious color palette that ties the room together.

3) Pushing Furniture Against the Walls

  • Mistake: Placing all furniture against the walls, which can create an awkward and uninviting layout.

  • Solution: Arrange furniture to create designated areas and to streamline traffic flow. Use rugs to define spaces and bring pieces closer together to create a more intimate setting.

4) Overlooking Scale and Proportion

  • Mistake: Using furniture and decor items that are too large or too small for the space.

  • Solution: Measure your space carefully and choose furniture and decor that fit well within the room. Balance larger pieces with appropriately scaled accessories and ensure there's enough space for movement.

5) Clutter and Lack of Storage Solutions

  • Mistake: Leaving clutter as an afterthought and not incorporating storage solutions.

  • Solution: Incorporate stylish and functional storage solutions to keep your space organized. Use baskets, shelves, cabinets, and multifunctional furniture to store items neatly and reduce visual clutter.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a more aesthetically pleasing, functional, and comfortable living space. Class dismissed.
